What is Double Chin Surgery?
When it comes to skin aging, the neck is one of the first places to show age, and, for some people, fat is more likely to collect under the chin. This extra fat and loose skin can affect their overall jaw and facial profile.
A plastic surgeon can correct a double chin using any of the following procedures:
- Chin liposuction. This procedure removes excess fat from under the chin.
- Submentoplasty. This surgery combines chin liposuction and smaller incisions under the chin to tighten muscles.
- Neck lift. This surgery, called lower rhytidectomy, involves removing excess skin or tightening the neck skin muscles to give the face a more contoured appearance
How does double chin surgery work?
Chin liposuction works by inserting a small tube, called a cannula, into the chin in different areas. Using gentle suction, small and strategic amounts of fat are removed from each location. The result is a smoother, more even profile with a reduced amount of fat under the chin. A submentoplasty works by making small incisions under the chin, as well as using liposuction on the neck. During a neck lift, your surgeon makes incisions behind the ear and sometimes underneath the chin, removes excess skin, and tightens neck muscles.

Preparing for double chin surgery
With any of these procedures to remove a double chin, you can expect to have some swelling and bruising for about ten to fourteen days. Some of the general anesthesia that is used can cause serious risks for people with certain health conditions, so it’s important to speak with your doctors and surgeons before scheduling any surgery.
LIPOSUCTION
During this procedure, your doctor removes any fat from beneath your chin and then shapes and sculpts the chin and neck to create a leaner and more contoured look. The fat is removed by a tube that is inserted into a small incision under the skin. During this procedure, only a local anesthetic is used to numb the area that is being treated.
FACE-LIFT
This is a surgical procedure that requires the use of general anesthesia, so you are asleep. Surgeons remove the fat and saggy skin from around the chin and neck resulting in the removal of your double chin.
NECK-LIFT
There are a few different types of neck-lift surgeries to choose from. There is a cervicoplasty, which works to remove any extra skin from around the neck area and there is a platysmaplasty, which tightens the neck muscles in order to improve the contour of your neck and chin. Most of the time, a surgeon will combine a traditional face-lift with one of the neck-lift procedures to give their patients optimal results. After this procedure, you may experience a tight feeling in your neck for a few months.

What to Expect?
You can expect some swelling and discomfort following the procedure. The skin on the neck and chin may feel very tight due to swelling and bruising. If you have facial drains to reduce blood and fluid buildup in your neck, a doctor will usually remove these after a day or two.
A doctor may recommend applying antibiotic ointment to any incision areas. They’ll usually recommend avoiding the sun or getting excess amounts of water on the face and chin for a few days.
